So far, we've built the foundation of your wardrobe with Essentials.

Now, it’s time to explore your Statements. The pieces that add personality, energy, and punch to your outfits.

Unlike Essentials, Statements don’t have to work all the time. Instead, they are an important tool in your closet for consistently nailing your style: creating balance, contrast, or a clear mood.

What Are Statements?

Statements are the items in your wardrobe that boldly and clearly reflect one of your style words.

They're like the exclamation point at the end of a sentence. They bring a certain punch, a mood, a feeling.

Unlike Essentials, which serve as the backbone of your wardrobe, Statements don't always feel completely you. They represent a part of you. One of your many you's.

Even a minimalist needs statements. A minimalist’s statements will just be… well… minimal. Like one of these tops, for example.

Examples of minimal statement pieces.

Typically, statements can be bold colors, unique silhouettes, unusual textures, or striking patterns. However, they could just be a slightly more exaggerated, or more literal, interpretation of one of your style words.

For instance, imagine your style words are vintage, feminine, and ethereal. One of your Essentials might be a light-colored cotton circle skirt—it's wearable for everyday and could fit any or all of your style words. Then, your Statements could include an ornate vintage brooch, a Manolo Blahnik-style kitten heel, and a sheer bell-sleeved top. Each of these items takes one of the three style words and pushes it a little more to the forefront, without completely contradicting the others.

Your Statements should:

  • Instantly draw your attention; they have an emotional pull

  • Align with one of your style words

  • Work back with your Essentials

More examples of statement pieces:

  • A jacket in a bold color

  • A quirky or vintage brooch that gives instant nostalgia

  • A large earring

  • A colorful bag, or one with a unique texture (e.g. fur, crochet, patent, metal)
